What to expect...
Successful candidates will spend time in my constituency office and out and about in Darlington. You will be given the opportunity to take part in a range of activities that give a flavour of how a Member of Parliament works on behalf of their constituents in and around the constituency.
You will get involved in a variety of activities, discussions, and tasks throughout the programme. These may include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting with constituency casework
- Q&A sessions
- Canvassing
- Learn about the political processes
- MP day to day activities
- Conversations with Peter and his office staff
- Engage with members of the public on political matters
- Discuss local and national policy
- Meet likeminded individuals
Work experience is always unpaid. Although some tasks may be set to give a real-world idea of the work of a Member of Parliament’s office, hosting a work experience student is an additional load on my staff. If the cost of travel or purchasing food during the work experience period is likely to be a challenge due to hardship, please flag this at the time of applying and we may be able to help you approach your school, college, local authority or other bodies who may be able to help.
Overall, this promises to be an engaging, insightful and enjoyable opportunity. It will also provide you with valuable skills to pursue a range of career paths, whether that be political or not.
