Today (20.3.24) Peter Gibson MP spoke in Parliament about HIV giving the Government suggestions on how to meet the pledge of zero new transmissions by 2030.
Peter has long campaigned for the Government to end new cases of HIV and today said, “In order to reach our commitment of zero new transmissions by 2030, that we need a four-pronged approach of improving sex education, the expansion of opt out HIV testing, expanding the availability of PREP and finding the 13,000 people with HIV not who are not under care.”
In response, Stuart Andrew MP said The opt out system which Peter had been an outspoken proponent of has helped identify 1,000 cases of HIV and that the Government were looking closely into why certain groups most likely to benefit from PREP (an HIV preventative drug) were not accessing it.
Afterwards, Peter commented, "I am glad that the Government has done so much on this already. Going forward, I will continue to campaign for a holistic approach to ensure that all in Darlington and across the country are safe from HIV.”
