The Environment Agency have undertaken an extensive clean-up of a river in Darlington.
The River Skerne, which runs through Darlington town centre, had attracted a number of complaints relating to debris in the water, over hanging shrubs and fallen trees due to recent storm damage.
After several constituents raised concerns, Peter Gibson MP for Darlington approached the Environment Agency, who are responsible for the river and requested that they take action.
As a result, the Environment Agency Field Operations team visited the River Skerne and carried out a full assessment of the obstructions.
Specialist contractors and machinery were brought in, trimming trees and bushes, making the river look its best. The work also helps prevent flood risks to local areas.
Peter Gibson MP for Darlington said: "It's gone really well so far. The Environment Agency have been doing a lot of work along the Skerne, and I thank them for their actions so far in making the River Skerne tidy by removing the unsafe trees and debris from the water course, not only does this help to make the river more presentable, but it also reduces the flood risk.
“I look forward to seeing the results of their large-scale clean-up that will be undertaken in March this year”.
