Peter Gibson MP has today (23.05.23) highlighted that the cost of fuel at petrol stations in Darlington is higher than in surrounding areas.
Speaking during Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) questions in the House of Commons, Mr Gibson said: “Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda are charging more for road fuel in my constituency than they are doing in neighbouring towns.”
He went on to ask what the Government was doing to bring down the cost of fuel. Responding to Mr Gibson, The Rt Hon Graham Stuart MP, Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, thanked him for raising the issue. He went on to outline that the Government has asked the Competition Markets Authority to carry out an enquiry into fuel prices, assuring Mr Gibson that the CMA is due to produce a full report with recommendations by the 7th July.
Mr Gibson has been contacted by a number of Darlington constituents on this issue and has been calling for supermarkets to equalise the cost of fuel at their locations across the region. He has previously written to the supermarkets on this issue calling on them to bring down fuel prices. His question in the House of Commons today builds on that continuing campaign.
Speaking about fuel prices, Mr Gibson said: “Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda are charging more for fuel in Darlington than they are just 14 miles away in Bishop Auckland, my constituents deserve a fair deal on fuel.
“I will continue to press the government and retailers to equalise regional fuel prices, so that my constituents aren’t penalised unfairly”
