Peter Gibson MP yesterday (15.03.23) supported the Firearms Bill as it passed its committee stage in the House of Commons.
The Bill was introduced in the House of Commons on 20 June 2022 by Shaun Bailey MP for West Bromwich West and passed second reading on 3 March 2023. The Bill seeks to make provisions to further strengthen our firearms laws and better mitigate any risk to public safety.
The UK has some of the toughest firearms laws in the world and ensuring public safety through effective firearms control is a priority for the Government. The Firearms Bill seeks to strengthen further this country’s already robust firearms controls in two important but distinct ways: by introducing a new offence to combat the unlawful manufacture of ammunition by criminals; and by closing a loophole in firearms law so the operator of a miniature rifle range must first be granted a firearms certificate by the police.
The bill has widespread support and was able to secure cross party support at its second reading, passing without the need for a division. It again secured cross party support at committee stage and will now continue on to its third reading before going to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.
Speaking about the bill, Mr Gibson said:
“I warmly welcome this move to further strengthen our existing robust firearms laws, which will help us to tackle crime more effectively and to continue to improve public safety. I was delighted to support this public safety measure in Parliament and I look forward to the bill swiftly passing through its remaining Parliamentary stages and becoming law.”
