Today (19.3.24) Peter Gibson MP for Darlington spoke in Parliament about a new law which would make stealing a dog or cat a specific offence.
Speaking in the debate, Peter, the owner of three dogs, including Westminster Dog of the Year Clemmie, stated “I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t acknowledge that the theft of a family pet would cause far more pain and anguish than say a wallet, purse or phone.
“They simply have far more value to us than money alone, and it is right that the law seeks to acknowledge that and mark them out as different that simple inanimate objects.”
Peter has long supported this new law and has been an outspoken champion of animal welfare and after the debate stated “Pets mean so much to so many. I cannot imagine how heartbreaking it would be if any of my dogs were stolen, and I think that criminals should pay.
“This is why I support pet abduction becoming a specific offence which will see our pets have more safety and owners have more comfort.”
