Earlier this week Peter Gibson MP (17.04.23) took part in the first tour of the Elizabeth Tower for MPs. The tower has been closed for some time, following extensive restoration work.
As part of the tour, Mr Gibson ascended the 334 steps to the top of the Elizabeth Tower and saw the hammer strike Big Ben on the hour, he also had the opportunity to walk behind the clock faces, now illuminated with LED lighting and to go into the machine room and see the mechanisms working the quarter chimes.
The Elizabeth Tower will soon open to members of the public to book tours and each MP has been allocated 8 free tickets a year for constituents. Mr Gibson encourages Darlington constituents to email him at [email protected] in order to express your interest in securing one of these tour spots.
Speaking about the tour, Mr Gibson said, “I was deeply privileged to be on the first tour of the Elizabeth Tower, following the restoration. It was a truly wonderful experience which I am sure many would enjoy.
“As your MP I have been allocated the opportunity to enable free tours for up to 8 constituents a year, and I would encourage all my Darlington constituents to get in touch and take up this opportunity.”
