Today (5.3.24) Peter Gibson MP spoke in a debate about the education of boys. In the debate, Peter focussed on the disparity of attainment levels between boys and girls, especially working-class boys.
During his speech, Peter stated:
“Research shows that boys perform worse than girls on most major educational indicators through their school years. There are some figures in particular that should cause concern.
Boys are far more likely to be suspended, twice as likely to face permanent exclusion and less than 60percent of boys meet the expected standard in all of English reading, writing and maths.”
Peter emphasised the importance of education calling it a ‘golden bullet’ for increased chances and opportunities in life.
Whilst praising steps that the Government has taken to bridge the gap, Peter suggested that more innovative solutions were needed to solve this issue. He called on all who can to do their part to help inspire left behind boys saying:
“It is down to us as politicians, schools, community groups, Government, and perhaps most importantly parents to take the lead in inspiring kids to want to take education seriously and for schools to have the resources to facilitate this.”
Peter went on to praise the library at Skerne Park Primary and how he has seen children get inspired to read and learn. He also applauded the local campaigners who saved Crown Street Library and the work it does to inspire parents and children alike.
Closing his remarks, Peter plead for waiting lists for assessments for children with special educational needs to be reduced and further emphasised the need for the Government to do all that it can to ensure that no child is neglected of opportunity.
In response, David Johnston MP, Under Secretary of State for Education praised Peter’s emphasis on the importance of reading and reiterated that the Government is committed to closing attainment gaps. David also stated how much he enjoyed his visit to Beaumont Hill School where he was inspired to see what this great school in Darlington is doing.
